Harold,
I am very glad your site is back up.  It is a wonderful reference for On30 and model trains in general!

THANKS,

On30 / Re: Help adding sound to On30 4-4-0 modern loco

The sound board you selected should work.  Wires will need to be soldered to it.  Also, it may or may not fit the cast in mounting posts in the tender.

The TSU 1100 will fit in the mail box.  A 1/2" speaker will fit in the cab, but a sugar cube speaker might give better sound.  A tiny Keep alive could also be squeezed in the cab.

On30 / Re: Do Porters with sound have capacitors?

If you want sound and motor keep alive in a Sound Porter, attach the blue wire on the same component as shown on the Heisler.  The black and white stripped wire of the cap can go on the existing negative cap terminal of the sound board.  I have used a TCS KA-2 in the past.  Today I would use their KA-3, since it is smaller.  I believe (in a previous topic) I provided a link to my thread on the Railroad Line Forums describing how to add keep alive to a few On30 locos.

The caps on the sound equipped Porters, are for sound only.  They are not for motor keep alive.

They were a non powered plastic kit, made by Tomy in the 1980s.  I don't believe very many were imported into the USA.  There has been one on ebay for $180.00, which I believe is a little high.  The loco shown on the link may have been painted a brass color,or cast in brass from the plastic parts.  It is very close to On30.  Some modelers have done free lance powered conversions.

On page 2 of On30, there is a thread on Currnt Keepers for the Shay.  There are 3 different Links listed on that thread with more info on adding Keep Alives for various decoders and locos.

Agree with Hunt.  A few years ago I was trying to add Stay Alive to the Porter.  My first Call to Soundtraxx resulted in a Polite NO, due to the need to solder to the circuit board.  I persisted and later George B found the correct points from one I of their engineers and sent it to me.  It required soldering the positive onto the center of the tiny circuit board.  The negative point was the same as the neg for the existing tiny sound only cap.  Many times the positive will be the blue light wire, but NOT on the Porter.  If you can find the positive and neg points on the bridge rectifiers, those could work.  Marcus Amman's Main North web page also has a lot of info on adding keep Alives to many decoders, plus some theory!  I never felt the need to add keep alive to my Heisler, since it almost never stalls.

On30 / Re: Climax loose wires
August 03, 2017, 11:16:45 AM
You can use a continuity tester to determine where the loose wires connect to on the loco (motor, track pickups or lights).  The circuit board might have markings on it ( for example M for motor). If not you can run a continuity test between the 8 pin connector terminals on the circuit board and those soldering points on the board where the wires broke.  8 pin connectors have a specific protocol for pickups.  Now you can finally determine what broken wire goes where.

The Shay pad has unused contacts for the back up light included in the Climax.  There are also a couple of extra components on the Climax board for the back up light.

Will those connections provide sound and motor stay alive, or just sound stay alive?

I have experimented with a tiny bit of tissue in a side frame bearing hole, and a tiny washer in the same spot.  It was a while ago.  You need to increase drag, but not inhibit the wheel from turning.  Also consider wheels with blunt axles.

The replacement trucks for the Heisler do come with a gearbox.  I would test the trucks with the side rods removed, and see if that helps.  One or more wheel sets could be out of quarter.

The above is another excellent site for stay alive cap info.  This one be Mark Gurries.

The above link should go to Marcus Ammann's Stay Alive page.  It has lots of info on adding stay alive capacitors to a variety of decoders.
