due to the construction and the design of the Bachmann Forney you can avoid the overhang at the rear only if you use curves with larger radii. A modification at the rear bogie will not bring success, except the running behavior in curves becomes worse.

Apparently similar to the Forneys is another design, the Mason Bogie. Like the Forney, the Mason Bogie has powered axles under the boiler and a trailing  truck under the rear bunker and tank behind the cab. But the Forney's driving wheels are fixed in the frame, rather than the articulated (swiveling) driving wheelsets of the Mason Bogie. So the Mason Bogie has two bogies (trucks), the Forney only one rear truck.

The conversion of the Forney into a Mason Bogie is likely to be difficult. Compare this with the construction of the first driving bogie of the articulated Bachmann 2-4-4-2.

Hello Ton,

you forgot something important:

Depending on the DCC control center, there is a constant circuit with a voltage between 15V and 20V.

The DCC signals from the control center are modulated on this voltage.
They are sent from the control center to the locos, where they are translated into motion commands or function commands by the decoder.

The necessary current for motion and functions is supplied to the loco by the constantly applied circuit.

I had a problem with the speed of my On30 Heisler and other sound ready with sound modules or sound on board locos from Bachmann Spectrum.
 
-----The locos are too fast if the throttle is full.---

Because they have build in Tsunami DCC and Sound I wrote to Soundtraxx.

George from Soundtraxx answered:
The original Tsunami did not support CV5 (Vhigh) or CV6 (Vmid). To slow the motor, you can play with the bemf settings in CV209 & 210, or build a custom speed table in CVs 66-95. If using this option, be sure to enable alternate speed tables in CV29 and select the user adjustable table by setting CV25 to 16.
The new Hyperdrive2 in the Econami and Tsunami2 do support CV 5 & 6.
I hope this helps.....


The solution for my Heisler was the following:

Step 1 Tsunami Manual and CV Default Register for each loco
Download the Spectrum Tsunami Manual

and the CV default Register for the Heisler from Soundtraxx homepage

There you can learn what happens if you alter the CV-Values and see the default values.

Step 2 Speed table
For reducing the speed I build a custom Speed table for CVs 67-94 in 28 steps in an Exel-sheet.
(See Steam sound users guide at page 18.)

I set for my speed table
CV67 = 5,
CV68 = 10,
CV69 = 15
in value steps of 5 at all CVs till
CV93 = 135,
CV94 = 140.

CV 94 default value is 255, so value 140 reduce Vhigh to ~50%

If you make value steps with 6 it will be a reduction to ~66% Vhigh.
If you make value steps with 7 it will be a reduction to ~75% Vhigh.

Step 3 Switch on speed table
Then I set CV 25 to 16 and CV29 to 22 to switch on the speed table.

Step 4 Chuff Rate
At least I set the "chuff rate" CV116 = 20.

My Heisler runs now smooth with an adequate speed and sounds fine.


extra Step 5 Lights
The Heisler, as delivered it is not set up for directional lights & the dimming feature does not work. For directional lights and dimming feature I altered the following

CV       new value
CV33 =1
CV34 =2
CV49 =129
CV50 =129
CV39 =128

With these settings the loco should then have directional lights and they are dimmable using F9.


You can make this with all locos, which have Tsunami DCC and Sound.

I read and program CVs with Bachmann Dynamis Pro DCC system.

Hello,

The Heisler, as delivered it is not set up for directional lights & the dimming feature does not work on F1 as the instructions says.

There is an easy solution for anyone who wishes to alter this.

This CVs below have to be altered with new values:

CV       new value
CV33 =1
CV34 =2
CV49 =129
CV50 =129
CV39 =128

With these settings the loco should then have directional lights and they are dimmable using F9 (not F1).
The Heisler has no Dynamo.

Hello

A simple answer is to buy an O scale crossing.
First cut out in the middle of one track for the On30 a piece with minimum  0.610 inch = 15,5 mm wide.
You must cut parallel to the future On30 rails the sleepers and the two O gauge rails.
Connect the both cut rails for O gauge track with rail joiners.
Then glue the booth connected parts on a base plate together.
Use an NMRA HO track gauge or better make three .650 inch = 16,5 mm width strips from cardboard for measuring and hold the exact On30 track width while gluing.
Be sure that the both tracks are isolated to another or isolate the complete crossing and switch the power for use On30 track or O track.

I found a Whitcomb now in my storeroom.

The measured size is

lenght = 7" over footboards, 7.5" over couplers

widtht = 2"

height =3.15" with horn on the roof


For clearences On30 see NMRA Standard S7, preliminary note and Old Time Dimensions, Scale O

It fit exellent for Bachmann On30. With this data you can make an On30 clearance gauge.


For short and small locos (for example 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 Porters from Bachmann) and 18' cars you can make youre own clearence gage with lesser dimensions.
