HO / boiler removal from a spectrum 2-10-2
October 02, 2009, 06:41:39 PM
Hi All
I can't find anything in the searches regarding but I know it has been discussed
I recently fired up DMIR #508 and found it to run erratically.

I held the engine in place and the belt started slipping on the pulley
I suspect excessive vertical play in the worm shaft but to inspect this I have to remove the boiler
can anyone help me with this task

Thanks

Lou

Did you check the wheelsets on the tender to make sure there is no binding on the wipers
the first one that I got the wipers were so tight against the backs of the wheels that the wheels would not rotate
I even painted dots on the outside of the wheels so I could see if they were turning(in most cases they weren't)
by carefully bending the wipers away from the back of the wheels I finally got them to rotate freely
that could cause a severe drag on the engine and limit your drawbar effort
I assume you installed the traction tire
merry christmas and a safe and happy new year

HO / Re: Using a sound decoder on a DC layout
November 21, 2007, 04:02:31 PM
MRC #1629 (i believe the number is correct #)has a plug and play steam sound decoder the speaker of which will mount under the coal load in the tender
all decoders can be programmed to operate in the DC mode the bell and whistle may be toggled by the direction control on the poewr pack (ala BLI)
but i'm not completely sure this will work
happy turkey

take a flat file and taper all the mounting tabs slightly also remove some material from each end of the underframes so they will comfortably  fit between the truck bolsters

Ive built dozens of them with no problems

Hope this helps

If he advertises that he uses the USPS for shipping. It then becomes mail fraud and they will investigate and prosecute

I'm not sure about UPS Fed Ex etc

Why would you want to install a decoder into a 2-10-2 ?????

It already comes with one installed programmed to a short address of 3

Hi Cactus
it's possible that the insulated wheels are rubbing against the sideframes.
check the side play in the axles.push the insulated wheel toward the sideframe and check with a resistance multimeter

you could paint the inside of the sideframe with liquid electrical tape available at home depot and other outlets

this way the wheel is insulated from the sideframe and you can see if the insulated wheel is rubbing on the sideframe

It worked for me
