. . .

Now I can separate the tender from the loco without worrying about breaking something.

Worry if you grip wires to disconnect tender from locomotive as doing so may pull  one or more wires from the connector.

. . .
Second question:
There is no electrical diagram for the new 4-4-0 locos.  It looks to me as though all the electrical pickups for the loco are in the tender.  It looks like wires from the tender are attached to a plug that plugs into the rear of the loco to power the motor and light.  Is that right?  It would be very helpful to separate the tender from the loco when I'm working on one of them so I hope it is a plug..
 . . .

Per exploded view diagram - there are electrical pickup wipers (part MT19 and MT20), which rub back of locomotive drivers.

It is a pin  connector in wires between tender to locomotive if your tender like this

*** Correction ***

S4 Shell removal very easy. Remove couplers, unfasten handrails from cab then lift shell.

One of the top rated, year after year,  model trains only brick & mortar in USA is less than seven miles from me.  More than ten with model trains are within 15 miles.

Connections are marked on the light board. The markings are probably on the underside as installed.

L+  is Light positive   perhaps is the blue wire
L-   is Light negative  perhaps is the black wire

Bachmann does not adhere to wire color codes. You cannot depend on wire color to determine it purpose.  You will have to test.

Down load JMRI and use that to adjust CVs   . . .

Caveat - JMRI DecoderPro cannot be used with some DCC systems.  It cannot be used with Bachmann DCC system,

Use the accessory AC terminals of a DC model train power pack to power the switch machine in the E-Z Track Turnout.

Click Here for turnout instructions. Read all the instructions do not depend only on the illustrations.

You can also use a wall wart transformer rated 12 to 16 volts output at 500 milliamps (mA) up to 1 amp in place of the DC model train power pack.  Either AC or DC output wall wart transformer will work.
