There must be a lot of people out there with evil thoughts of modifying locos to get what they want,I'm one of them.I just completed a small On30 diesel shunter from an old Triang 00   0-6-0 steam loco to get what I wanted. It would be nice if Bachmann made a tank loco,I'm sure sales would be high.We can only hope,in the meantime those evil thoughts will continue. Did you have a limiting resistor in series with the LED.s?..The decoder probably would  have 12 volts  available for lights, too much without the resistor.

was the decoder hard wired or plugged in?

They are LED's,have you tried reversing the polarity?.The wires are very fine ,you may have a broken wire near the decoder or the decoder may need programming.

I can't see any reason why a smoke generator couldn't be retro fitted to a Shay,Climax or any On30 loco except the Porters due to room constraints. Now there's a cottage industry for an enterprising person. Smiley

Check out it out on the net,but NSW is on the east coast of Australia between Queensland and Victoria. Many logging lines existing in those three states, using horses,Shays,Climaxes,Porters and many different European locomotives. Some millers were enterprising and built locos from remains and parts from various locos.........Peter

I have found out the hard way that a number of American made and branded decoders do not like 18-20 volts at all, they are not meeting the NMRA standards. Many of them  have leaked smoke and stopped working. My system has 20 volts at the rails ,so as a precautionary move I now only use the better quality brands at a higher price(Tsunami,ESU and Soundtrax)The higher priced decoders give a much better sound and response in operation and don't smoke.........................Peter

I wouldn't be worried by the trees, what about the rust in the turntable deck(44 mins on the video).I can see the loco going onto the turntable and breaking the back of the deck. What could one say....OOOPPPPSSSS
15  Discussion Boards / On30 / Re: 0-4-0 Side Rod Gas Mechanical Binding on: February 13, 2018, 07:05:33 PM
To prove the problem, remove the side rods by removing the counter weights from the wheels that the rods are connected to. If the the loco runs ok then the problem is in the rod area. What I would do in that case is refit the rods and counter weights making sure the rods (a 1/4 of a turn difference)are parallel to each other.Wear in the rods won't be a problem as the two sets of wheels are driven by the gears.  Hope this helps .....................................................................Peter
