16  Discussion Boards / HO / E7-A Loco on: January 27, 2017, 09:38:00 AM
Hi fellow model railroaders...

I was @ my HS yesterday I am thinking of picking up a Bachmann E7-A DCC with sound value package in PRR Tuscan paint scheme. It is a decent sized loco (in length) I was wondering what is the lowest radius turns this loco can handle. I plan on using the Loco for passenger service since I already have PRR Passenger cars & this loco fit's into the ERA & the PRR used the E7-A for passenger service.

How is the reliability on this loco as well

Like richy say's get yourself a coupler gauge. Personally I don't use un-coupler magnets I think there more of a hassle than there worth. If you remove the magnet all together your issue will almost correct it self right away

I would stay with bachmannn's suggestion of 22R turns I would not go any lower.

You should be able to swap them out. My only concern would be if the chassis design changed at all if not you should be able to make the changes.

HoModeler, could you provide some details on the kit and the railroad you're building?  In particular, what era are you modeling, and what geographic area?  Although a lot of things are similar in an industry like coal mining, certain practices may vary depending on the location.

For instance, large piles of coal on the ground at a mine are rarities in West Virginia (where I'm from) because they represent inventory that isn't doing anything, and in any event, in the narrow valleys here there isn't room for them!  Most likely such coal stocks will be at an end user (such as a power plant) or at a transfer point (such as a rail-barge terminal).

Hello & thank your for your response
My Layout is mainly 50's to late 70's I model the PRR & Lehigh Valley RR I live in Bethlehem PA & Home of the Black Diamond Passenger Route... My Layout is pretty much Freelanced & my Buildings are pretty close to ERA correct in years. But I run all PRR & LVRR rolling stock & Loco's on exception of a UP Big boy steam engine...

I am thinking of making 2 Bin's for coal piles right now my coal mine is just the building & 2 tracks... The kit coal mine is a non Bachmann kit so I do not want to get flagged so I am not going to say what kit it is..
I thank you in your post & hope this helps you help me lol

Hello everyone... I decided to add another industry for switching on my layout I am building a Coal Mine from a kit I bought at my HS. I have already started building the add-on section to my layout & track my question is when I get that far how would I go about making a few STOCK PILES of Coal & the items to use to make the piles & where to place in accordance to the building...My Coal Mine Kit has a 2 track setup.

Any help on this will help Thanks

25  Discussion Boards / HO / DCC & Sound for Acela Loco "Not the HHP Loco" on: January 14, 2017, 09:39:26 AM
Hello Everyone.... I have a slight problem / issue Friday afternoon my dad came over & my neighbor for an operating session on my layout. MY dad has an Acela Set he picked up a long time ago from a Train Show that no longer is run "maybe some of you old timers heard of it" The Broken Rail Train show held @ Goodman Campus Rauch Field house on Lehigh U in Bethlehem PA I Believe it only lasted 2 years.

Anyways My Dad loves to run his Acela when he comes for operating sessions & about 3 years ago I took my dads Loco to get a Sound & DCC decoder installed I took it to a HS that has closed up. I Paid the guy $ 200.00 up front to install the Decoder & did not get the Loco back for another 6 weeks & constant messages left with the guy. Well to find out the Loco only has a Idling sound to it No throttle up no nothing else just a very faint horn. That night I took the Loco to a different HS & the Train Tech popped off the shell & said he did not recognize the Decoder Brand & asked who did the install I stated the guys name & the guy said to me I got Robbed Blind & the guy was a CON-MAN.. & went on to say wile working @ the HS he stole many clients Locos took out the good stuff & would re install less quality grade stuff. 1 reason that HS closed down... He also said that guy is under court orders he can not go to any Train Show or inside any Train show within the courts limits... GREAT Now what.

The Train Tech suggested I got on hear & to ask what if any DCC sound decoder can be used he did not have an answer for a replacement. He did say to try TCS WOW decoders.. Can anyone help me find a good replacement sound decoder....

Just wondering Why you are dismantling your Acela car's I have an Acela Set but not with the HHP Loco's...& I love my set... Only thing I did was a DC to DCC with sound swap out...

Like WoundedBear stated Shay's are a tricky Loco to handle & little problems with there operation like you are experiencing is 1 of the reasons no Shays run on my layout. Not that I don't like Shay's I DO it's just I don't want to deal with there operational issues.

What you can do though take a section of roadbed & attach a section of track to the roadbed & when you are moving your Shay's To & From the track. Just put your made track up against your layout track & slide your Shay onto your layout track same for when you remove the loco... I believe there is a product out on the market that does the same was what I suggested but I don't know the exact name of it...

Nice find... Most LHS around this time of year offer Clearance sales & % off sales to make room for the new products coming out this year... My HS just started a 35% sale on all HO & N scale related stock I just picked up 3 PRR Box Car's off Bachmann's Sliver Series lineup... I got 3 Bachmann PRR Passenger Cars in Tuscan red scheme & lighted interiors for Christmas "Nice Cars"

Thinking of picking up a Bachmann DC NY Central Shark Nose Engine I seen my HS had & throwing in a DCC & Sound decoder I have...

Looks Pretty Good.... But I would gotten a full sheet of plywood... Plywood is cheap this way you could of put a full piece in where you needed it. Instead of shoe horning it in with a bunch of scrap wood but I understand everyone is on a budget.
