HO / Re: Re-Railers????
July 07, 2012, 05:27:13 PM
They don't happen that often, but when they do, they never correct themselves.  I am using new Bachmann Nickel Silver track, it is assembled correctly, 3 Bachmann diesel engines and one Rivarossi steam 4-6-4 engine.  One loop has an incline and the other track is flat.  Same problems on both tracks.

HO / Re-Railers????
July 07, 2012, 05:07:54 PM
I am just starting to put together a medium size layout, not huge, but has a number of turns and an overpass.  I installed a re-railer at each point where the train would come out of a bend.  Why is it that not a single one of the darn Bachmann re-railers will put a car, engine or tender back on the track?  I thought that was what they were suppose to do!  My train can do 2 laps going over 7 re-railers per lap and not fix the problem once.  This is fairly consistant (not the de-railing, but when it does happen, the re-railing).

I could see it if it happened at one re-railer every time and the others worked, but this happens at all of them pretty much all the time.  Half of the time the train is coming out of a turn, and the other half just before entering a turn.  Doesn't matter, same results.  Not running fast either, in fact, pretty darn slow.

These were not cheap, and I feel like I kind of got shafted by Bachmann.

HO / Speed matching an FA and an FB diesel unit
July 07, 2012, 04:48:59 PM
I have 3 Erie Lackawanna diesel units, one is an A unit with sound, on is a B unit with sound and the third is an A unit without sound.  I am trying to make a consist from the A unit without sound and the B unit with sound.  The A unit is traveling faster than the B unit to the point where the A unit is growling slightly like a laboring motor.  The A and B units (both with sound cards) seem to match each other's speed almost perfectly and do not produce this noise.  If I watch carefully at the couplers, the A and B units that have sound pull evenly when starting out. When the A unit without sound and the B unit with sound start out together, there is a sharp snapping tug on the B unit by the A unit.

Does a sound card affect the engines voltage to the point where I will see this much difference in torque or is it something else.

I am running with a Bachmann Dynamis controller and no other loads on the layout.

HO / Re: EZ track power connections for DCC
June 23, 2012, 08:32:04 AM
Thank you ripvanwnkl,

Sigh of relief, at least for now.

Really did not want to start off by soldering all those connections together.

Our layout is not near that large, about 3 tracks on about 2 sheets of plywood area total.  It will be (at least for now) taken apart after the Christmas holidays.  Think I will follow your lead as well as using the dielectric grease at the joints.  On my boat, it really seems to help electrical conductivity on the plugs of my electronics.

HO / EZ track power connections for DCC
June 23, 2012, 07:02:38 AM
I'm sorry, I read too much and sometimes it confuses me more than helping me.  But, everything I have read regarding DCC control and track says to provide power to every track section or at least every 3 feet of track.  Also, they all seem to say you need to solder all of your track connections together.  I do have a small pencil tip type soldering tool, but if I heat the rail and connector hot enough to solder them together, I'm sort of afraid of melting the plastic ties/roadbed.

I am using Nickel-Silver track sections.  Do they really need to be soldered, and how often do I really need to have a power connection?  What about using Dielectric grease at each rail coupler connection instead of soldering.

General Discussion / Reversing an "A" unit
June 09, 2012, 08:51:30 PM
I am new to model railroading, and it is far different than when I was a youngster.  I purchased an Erie Lackawanna diesel engine (64603) model, FA2, and now have learned about FA2 with sound.  If I purchase the same engine equipped with DCC and Sound, can I run one of them in reverse to have a dual engine setup using two "A" engines?
