46  Discussion Boards / General Discussion / Re: Bachmann does not make a E-Z 3-way switch? Am I right! on: December 16, 2021, 06:52:20 PM
Shinohara made a code 100 #6 3-way switch at one point. I believe it was item #108. They may still be available on line, either on eBay or a retailer with some left over.

You could use an Atlas 'Snap-Relay', with a standard switch control, to get the extra connections for indicator lights. Something like this:

The switch control box would go where it says, "To DS64", if you're not using a DS64 for DCC control of your switches. Put a resistor, 470 - 1K Ohm depending on how bright you want your lights, in the "-" lead from the LEDs. 5VDC on the '+" lead should be about right.

The simplest solution would be to clip off the coupler mounting arm and body mount knuckle couplers using one of the Kadee draft gear boxes.

The simplest way to convert the GP40 to DCC is using the NEC BACH-DSL board. Even though it says it's a replacement for Bachmann's "DCC Equipped" diesels, it can also be used as a replacement for the light board in most straight DC diesels.

According to the Bachmann e-store info it's DCC ready...

An Aristo-Craft large scale 'Southern' gondola, complete with custom animal load, for my HO layout. I ended up using it as a holder for extra DCC system throttles when my layout was set up. It's in one of the boxes with the rest of the layout for now.

The 4-window, end cupola caboose was introduced in the 1900s. Some were still in use when the Burlington Northern was born 70 years later, and may very well still have been around for the merger with Santa Fe that created the BNSF. A similar design was also used by the Chicago & North Western.

Sorry. As much as I love the steam I grew up with, my "KL&B Eastern Lines RR Museum" is set in today. So, while steam may be hauling the freight from the interchange to businesses along the museums tracks, diesels are delivering those cars to the interchange.

And some modelers model a railroad museum so they can run whatever they want in the here and now.

We used to watch long strings of those hoppers hauling coal down to the Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac River near the Gov. Harry Nice Bridge back in the late 70's, early 80's.

I've found one of these gauges very handy for figuring out screw sizes. This one combines US and Metric sizes in one gauge. And is one of the few gauges that goes all the way down to 1.6mm, where most others stop at 2mm.

When you find a screw from one area of a loco that fits an empty hole your trying to find a replacement for, such a gauge lets you know exactly what thread size to order as a replacement.

The power pack may be rated for 16V, but how many volts does it take to make the train operate at a reasonable speed? That's the voltage you need to be concerned with. If it's 9V, or less, no problem. This is one of the many times a multimeter to measure voltage across the track can be a model railroaders best friend.

You guys are pretty cool, but I'll never understand the love for Steam locomotives!  Cool

They don't sneak up on you like a diesel does.

I'm surprised it is still standing with all that rust!!

Don't lean on any walls.

60  Discussion Boards / HO / Re: Which TCS decoder for a Bachmann HO-scale GP40? on: December 01, 2021, 01:07:23 AM
The DP2X might work if there's enough room under the hood for it. An alternative would be the T1P-MH, which has a 3.5" wiring harness terminating in an 8-pin plug. This should give enough flexibility to locate the decoder in an area where it will not interfere with installing the shell.
