31  Discussion Boards / General Discussion / Train Engineer/Railroad Worker Requirements on: October 04, 2011, 10:02:20 PM
Becoming a train engineer, or at least work for a railroad company (specifically NS, CSX, CN, or Amtrak) is a job I am highly considering for a full-time career. I've chosen the 4 railroads listed, as they are all local. I've googled requirements, and have found you must be 21 years of age to OPERATE a train. Can anyone tell me if this is true, or if it differs between companies? And also, are there any railroad job opportunities that someone can do at age 18? And also, if anyone here does or has worked for any railroad companies, which railroad would you think treats their employees the best? I've hears Amtrak and CSX don't treat them well. I don't know how, so that's why im asking  Smiley

Any input is appreciated.

I just watched the episode. I found it pretty entertaining (like all other episodes of the show). The train jokes were a little harsh, but I still found them pretty entertaining. The N scale part was funny. I had never known the exact size of them until Sheldon put one in his mouth... Also, if I'm not mistaken, there were train jokes in Two and a Half Men, when Herb had an HO scale layout, and he was as well dressed in a engineers uniform. Charlie and Alan, if I remember correctly, made fun of him for it.

Was that on the season premier or tonight's episode (I haven't watched tonights episode yet so don't post any spoilers Smiley)

I don't remember any trains on last weeks episode.

I dont remember any on last weeks episode either. I haven't watched tonight's either. Interesting that it was a Rail King set too  Smiley

I consider the "modern era" as anywhere from 2000-2011. The 1990's, if I were to model that era, I would just simply call it "the 90's" (unless there's a certain year  Wink). Same goes for the rest of the decades, such as 80's, 70's, 60's, etc. Just my input  Smiley

if those were bales of hay, maybe that's why terry called it a "mow" train. wonder which car has the mowers?
Lol nice one... But yeah they should be spools of cable. See those loads on Ice Road Truckers quite frequently...

Last week delays on the eastbound Western routes were even worse. Passengers who were on the Zephyr who were supposed to connect to the Cardinal in Chicago were put off the train in Galesburg and taken by bus to Indianapolis, where they boarded the Cardinal at midnight. At breakfast in the diner the next morning, a fellow passenger who was headed home to West Virginia told me it had taken all day to cross Iowa. No offense to Iowa, but, sheesh. ...

Wow. And I thought I had it rough... But it was my first time on a train, longest I've been in anything public transportation (excluding this trip) was a 3 hour plane ride to San Diego. I did get alot of good train footage though, which I'll be putting into a YouTube video of my vacation.

@Johnson Bar Jeff Very nice station it is. I came home today, 3 hours late on the Wolverine, but not because of weather, but because of Norfolk Southern. They're charging Amtrak to go at medium to high speeds on portions of their track, and Amtrak doesn't want to pay it. So instead we went 20 miles per hour alot of the trip... Not fun to be in a Horizon class car for seven hours...

I live in Metro Detroit but am taking a vacation in Chicago. Took Amtrak's Wolverine, and I'm glad the storms didn't come here! Wouldn't be good to be stuck somewhere longer than expected. I must say though, Union Station is impressive (anyone thats been there would know what I'm talking about)! But I'm also glad the storm weakened before it hit the most populated places in the Northeast. That's one of the reasons I don't really want to live by an ocean...

This is one of my favorite movies. JDLX was right. The scenes with the train were not on Hawaii, but instead here in the lower 48 (can't remember exactly which state). Like JD said, no trains were shown on Hawaii. Just ships, cars and trucks  Wink

Go to Google Earth and type in Isle of Man. According to the map in the article, Sodor would be to the right of Isle of Man. Instead, the British Isles and the Irish Sea occupy the space.

That's an amazing engine you got there. The paint (from what I can see in the pictures) is flawless. Excellent work  Wink

Nice one Doneldon. Anyway, that's surprising NarrowMinded how they looked gutted.

How bad did the cars burn? From what I saw on the news there was a fire on the side of one car. And  there can't be that many dead because they all most likely ran away from the fire while inside the car, unless the car just instantly burned.

I saw this on the news as well. They said the truck hit the train. Usually it's the other way around. They said one passenger and the truck driver were the only fatalities. I don't understand how someone can actually hit a train unless your blind. And they were superliners of all things. More shiny, taller and longer than most frieght cars. It just boggles me.
