Yes the 8 screws was the first batch so expect to buy some metal trucks even though little run time.  The first batch were really bad at just falling apart and as I recall the springs on the pickup would get hot and fail and the plastic inside would also fail. It was not just the bottom cover plate plastic breaking.

Yes the number of screws is the answer. 4 screws means metal. I think they all have the lube plugs.   Bill, thanks for your effort, information and guess.

I agree, they are my favorite of all the Bachmann steams.

Yes I'm aware of the truck issues.  Personally I have my original that I already swapped out for the metal trucks and hav one of the 2 truck ones.  Then I bought a 'for parts' one pre-Covid years ago and bought the replace trucks for it but have not gotten around to it.  It was just an observation. 

Does anyone have any idea how many of the 2 Truck Shays were sold?  I see them all over eBay now days.  Just curious.

When did you purchase yours, was it purchased new?  I assume you are talking about the gear that they have had a "D" replacement available for years and is not that expensive.

Will this work from the 2-8-0?  I thought I read at one time that they were all the same?  No?

I've just seen mine where there were colored wires then they became black especially where could be seen.

I think the mainly black is a result of painting wires to hide them. But it is what it is.

You end up having to trace them.

I am looking for where to get a male end for the connectors that Bachmann uses for going between the engine and tender.  In particular the 6 pin cable CONNIE-10548.  I talked to parts and she has no idea but said they never got the corresponding end for the 6 pin just got the 2 and 4.

I don't think so but make sure you have the slip drive shaft. Others will probably jump in.
