Just a thought since I am a DC only (analog) N scaler.  If you are on a budget and do not need to run multiple trains simultaneously on the same track, you may not need DCC.  Also, the old idea of using track block sections (power contolled portions of the same track) works.  Ideally if you must have DCC, factory DCC equipped locomotives or DCC ready (has pin plugs for drop in DCC decoders) would be easier.  If you try to add DCC to an older locomotive, you will usually need to mill the frame to make room for the decoder then hard wire (solder yourself) the decoder and lights.  You could easily spend some serious dollars on an old locomotive modification and still have something that would not work or be substandard.  Personally, I get by fine without DCC and save around $40 or more per locomotive, plus $200 or more for a DCC command center.  A simple DC (analog) power pack comes with many trainsets, or is available from $50 to $100 separately.
