So I have an older 2-8-0 and need a new smoke unit.  I called bachmann and they don't have one but will trade my engine for a new one for $40.  The new one won't have smoke, too bad.  I like my old train with smoke and I have already converted it to DCC and put in front and rear 3mm led lights.  I just want a smoke unit.  Does it have to be this hard??  I'm getting nowhere with bachmann.  Any ideas??

DCC and smoke get along together like penguins and sea lions.

Is your older 2-8-0 the Bachmann Plus version?  If so, drop me an email.

Growing older is mandatory but growing up is optional.

if you like working with electronics, here are some ideas. the stuff is probably at radio shack. these are simple transistor switches and can draw the voltage from a decoder light connection. draws very little from the light circuit. you would have to figure out where to get 12 volts dc from the decoder. make sure you have a meter to measure with.

You could also look on eBay for an engine that is similar but may need work but has a good smoke unit, then you could witch it out.  I have bought some engines on eBay with smoke for under $20.

Good Luck
