The Berkshires do NOT like the basic switch/turnouts that come in track packs.

They can handle the straight thru part, but will derail about 98% of the time
going thru the turn out part.Guarantee it.

Like ABC recommends,,you will want to go with the #6 turnouts.
Using 18" radius curves is setting yourself up for problems in the future, but we are in agreement on turnouts, the Bachmann #6s will do nicely.

jbsmith thanks for the info..hopefully mom will want to play also and believe you me he will understand from the start that the train is different than his other toys...the only thing he has really been rough with are the johnny lightning herbie the love bug cars and the 1/25 maisto (spelling??) die cast but I think they are not the best quality as far as being played with , more for looks...but to be 4yo he is really smart and understands things and has respect for what we teach him or maybe I'm just bias lol but thanks a lot to all who have and will reply till I get the jist of things
