have isolated the problem. shoving the motor power tabs against the frame gave it power but it died again... i might rewire it, should i? i should fix the problem.

Good for you.  I'd try to fix it if I were you.  After all, you paid good money for it and fixing it costs you virtually nothing and saves you the cost of the engine.  And, if you can't make it work, you've lost nothing by trying...after all, it doesn't work now.  I hope you remember who you bought it from so you can avoid his "bargins" in the future.
