Actually, extended knuckles are prototypical.  They were often used by logging railroads for the same reasons-very rough track and non-standard rolling stock.  Some roads also had knuckles with a hole drilled down through them and slot cut into the middle of the face so that they could couple up to link-and-pin equipment.
