I was joking with a friend about grand pacific junction #100 (behind a historic plaza next to the ns chicago line). Its clearly stuffed and mounted but how much would it cost to restore it? It probably just needs boiler work & a few fixes like the fire box door. It sort of resembles the 0-4-0 that runs at the B&O roundhouse in baltimore maryland. It would be neat to see a steam engine that's a native to northeast ohio!

Looking at restoration projects of similar size locomotives I reckon you wouldn't get much change from three hundred thousand dollars and that's if it isn't in too bad a condition internally.

jtf-

It's hard to say without seeing the loco and going over
it carefully but I would say Poliss is being kind. A quality
cosmetic fix up and minor repairs would eat up $300K.
With boiler and tube work it could easily be twice that.

That's a pretty loco but the "restoration" to make this operable also must include meeting the US federal inspection qualifications.   I would also think the cost might be closer to the 7 figure mark.

I agree...that is a nice locomotive; but restoration to Federal standards would be unbelievably costly. In this economy; where would the funding come from?

An alternate approach (for the well heeled) would be to contract with the Chinese and have a new locomotive built from the original plans (including any new Federal requirements). As I understand it, the last steam locomotive builder, in the world, is located in Hunan Province (China). It seems to me (assuming my memory is correct...big assumption) that several tourist railways have followed such a route for their steam motive power. Something to think about. BTW: Have you won the huge Powerball lottery?

That is a cute little engine.  Smiley

Reminds me of the old Mantua 0-4-0T.
