My Anniversary 4-6-0 White Pass steam engine has a dummie knuckle coupler on the front on the engine. I would like to put a Bachmann working knuckle coupler on the front. But the dummie coupler on the front looks about half the size of a regular knuckle coupler. Before I take the dummie coupler out would like to know if a working Bachmann coupler would fit. Has someone done this with Bachmann couplers. I know Kadee makes a coupler that fits the front with some minor alterations. If Kadee is the only way to go, will Kadee couplers couple with Bachmann couplers? Thanks, Bill.

Hello Bo,

You can use a coupler and pocket from the shortie Bachmann flat cars or boxcars and modify the pilot.  Here are some pictures that may be helpful.   I am not sure of the order, but hopefully you will get the idea.   Basically you remove the pilot and front dummy coupler.  You then open up the pilot to fit the coupler from the shortie car.   You epoxy a spacer as shown in the pictures and drill a hole to fasten the new coupler then reinstall the pilot.

I have done this to all my 4-6-0's and it is really nice to be able to do switching and double heading.

Hi Bill, thanks for the info, looks like the way to do it. Now I'll just keep my eyes open for a shortie car. Thanks again, Bill W.

Glad it  was helpful.  BTW Looks like Bachmann sells the couplers online & the price seems right:
