speed controller question

Hello all, I have a question. 

I have a new set (white pass and yukon) and when I power it up the light on the speed controller never comes on whether it is connected to the track or not.

Is the light on the basic speed controller simply a power light? Or does it somehow validate the connections? 

I'm trying to figure out if my controller/transformer is bad or I goofed up a connection.

Thanks for your response. I guess I should have added that the train doesn't run

Turns out the controller is bad, or at least flaky. Regardless if its connected to the track or not sometimes it comes on and sometimes not.

I called customer service and they were absolutely great. Even tho the controller was working at that moment they recommended I swap it out and they followed up with phone calls and emails plus got it out right away.  Very impressive.
