In summary Rogertra, don't discount the value/fun of mini layouts and switching puzzles. Just the design and construction of either a sector plate or transverser (transfer table) will stimulate your creative juices.

Ray.

I don't "discount the value/fun of mini layouts."  I just don't believe in switching puzzles.  While the first few times they may be fun and brain teasers after a while they become just plain frustrating as they are unrealistic.  But then I'm all for realism and don't go in for the "toy train" approach that some people like.

I've built a couple of small switching layouts, usually in the 2 x 8 and 2 x 12 foot range and I avoided the switching puzzle approach, tracks that hold one loco and one car, like the plague as they are completely unrealistic.
