Your best bet is to use the Trains website. They let you search by zip code to see if there's something in your region.

Both Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman magazines have club show announcements. There are several clubs in the NY/NJ area that have open houses. The biggest that comes to mind is the O and HO club in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The Bay Ridge Society of Model Engineers, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, have a nice O scale layout. They have open house in October.

I know this is late, but during the month of June, there are alot of NJ open houses on the garden RR tour.
If you are willing to travel to MD, Timmonium has multiple train shows each year with all guages of trains.
