Recently acquired a Bachmann U36B, model# 64053. Had hoped to covert it to DCC, but was surprised when I removed the shell. By the time I removed enough material from the frame to install even a Z scale decoder & leds, there wouldn't be much left of the frame. If anyone out there has done this I would greatly appreciated an email & possibility a illustration or two of same installation.

My understanding is that the U36B has the same frame as the GP40. A NCE decoder might fit. The decoder is suppose to be for DCC ready diesels.
I just looked at the GP40 diagram.
The DZ125 decoder is quite thin also. It is good for 1 amp. About the size of a dime but a little thicker.
No idea on the space available though.

Rich:

I have an NCE Z14SR decoder. To clear the shell I would have to remove almost all of the metal above the motor. Could possibly mount it under the front light location. However, to install LED lights both ends of the frame would also have to enlarged to accept the LEDs. So unless someone out there has tried this & has a better suggestion this engine will remain part of the small DC controlled portable layout. That way it will have a mixed liverly of C&O, Seaboard & BN engines. After all it's my railroad & I can  run it to suit myself!!

Ok, found out the problem with my first answer. This is an N scale loco. You did not mention this and the message probbly should be in the N scale forum.

My bad. I assumed HO scale. Next time I will search out the model number first.
