two comments:

first, it is great to see ns taking the time to celebrate its heritage. i've seen several of the heritage units as they were released from the paint shop in altoona. can't wait to see the rest of them. they did a much better job than union pacific did.

second, regarding the track. during the 1970s, very bad track was all too common in the northeast. to this day, some of us would rather forget penn central ever happened. during their tenure, we watched everything deteriorate to the point trains would derail sitting in the yard. ever have a derailment at 0 mph? conrail rabuilt most of the mainlines, and abandoned or sold off most of the branch lines. my guess is that this line is an old penn central line that conrail sold off rather than fix.

I only wish it was possible to lay track like that and still get decent operation. So many, specially narrow-gauge, modellers try to depict a run down, end of days look and manage a perfect degree of make do and mend everywhere except for the track, which is always perfectly level and perfectly aligned. Sooo much atmosphere in that photo.

fi you handlay track. it is very easy to get this effect. you really don't need to have low rail joints for it to look right, just laqy your straight track without a straight edge.

Dear All,
Three Rail and I have been at the Spencer Shops for the last three days.  What a fabulous event, incredibly well run, and obviously thoroughly thought out.  The NS staff, museum staff, and scores of volunteers kept everyone safely engaged, despite dangerously high temperatures.  Thanks to all who made his work!
We will post pictures soon.
Thanks, NS!

they do deserve alot of credit. unlike the union pacific, they did this to celebrate their heritage. union pacific did their heritage units for copyright reasons. union pacific charges licensing fees for the use of their predecessor railroad's logos, ns does not and so has nothing to gain from painting the heritage units. it is interesting to note the lengths ns went to to get these right. several of them have made trips back to the paint shop to correct minor details. the most obvious was the lehigh valley, which had black & white stripes added to the nose. but it wasn't the only one.

i've seen photos of the gathering at spencer, wish i could have been there. but i can't wait until they start showing up on trains as i know they will.
