To make it easy merely put steps involved in a list, first to last, to remove shell form an HO 2-6-0 and a 2-8-0. No involved explaining necessary. Like:
1) unplug decoder wires (with finger nails or how ?)
2)(if need be) remove such and such grab irons/pipes
3) remove these screws (and exactly where)
4) lift/pull shell toward (which way)
5) (if need be) remove gear box cover
6) lube these parts: ----------
etc, etc.
Much thanks, Mark

There is a HO forum here also. Some seem to miss the proper forum.
Download the loco diagram also.

I use a small straight jewellers screwdriver to carefully extract a plug. Just like Jonathan in the below link. Scroll down a little.

Mark,

The links rich has provided will help, especially the pictures.

You mentioned a gearbox cover.  This part is the lower plate, which holds the wheels in place as well as covering the main gear.  There is no need to remove this for regular maintenance.  In fact, I would not remove it at all... too many little parts that can get lost, AND can be very difficult to reassemble.  The first link shows how to remove the motor housing which will give you access to the main gears.

On the 2-6-0:  you will have to gently separate the boiler stays from the boiler.  They are the two stiff wires that connect the pilot to the smokebox.  If you gently pry them from the smokebox, they should swing to the side.  Then remove the rear screw from the bottom of the cab, like all the other steam locomotives.

If you go slowly and gently, especially the first time, it will make more sense as you proceed.

Regards,

Jonathan

Thanks very much for all the explanations. I feel a lot more confident about it now. Great to know gear box cover is a no-no !

Mark-

I'm not sure if there are more posts about removing loco shells
or problem turnouts but I'm positive that one or the other is the
number one topic of discussion here.
