In the film "The Greatest Show on Earth" there are two Steam Locomotives. (Spoiler) In the wreck scene ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9ITp_xSaxE ) just before the man and his car are struck by the oncoming train, the cylinder cocks on the right is open but not the other. Can the engineer of a Steam Locomotive open one but not the other? ???

Simple answer, no.  Both cylinder cocks open and close at the same time.

Poor special effects but pretty good modelling for the era.  :)

The models used were provided by a firm called Little Engines in California.  These are live steam models, supposedly to 1-inch to the foot scale, a ratio of 1/12, which happens to be dollhouse scale.

Poor special effects?  I don't know about that, in my opinion this looks better than a lot of digital effect stuff that's out there, including the smoke and steam effects.

I agree. For the time when this movie was made the effects are quite good.
