I want to have a 0-4-0 porter with a headlight (and its supports) from a 0-4-2.

I imagine the easiest way to accomplish this is to swap the cabs and footplates between the two models, but how much disassembly is involved?  Do I just have to remove the wheels and a few screws?

I assume it's easier than putting a replacement 0-4-2 boiler assembly on a 0-4-0, right?

Well I went ahead with the project and I'm quite proud of the result:

For anyone else attempting this, the method I assumed would be easiest worked without having to cut or solder any wires.

Be very careful not to bend or break the electrical pickups when refitting the wheels, and make sure the axle bearings are in their slots when reassembling.

Also be sure to remove the screw in the side of the boiler.  (It's hidden by the in-cab bunker on the 0-4-0.)  Once it's out you can lift the boiler and free the footplate.

Sadly, the wires in the 0-4-0 won't reach the bunker of the 0-4-2.  Those will need to be hidden in the cab or lengthened.
