Glad it worked out.  Keep asking questions. We try to help.  Occasionally, the help will conflict.  That is where your experience, skills, and knowledge will help you filter the answers to what will work for you.

Chris,

Good for you 8), Glad things worked out.   The new power supply will definitely help since it will overcome weak track joints up to a point.

In the future when you have problems with your train and can't really tell why, always start with the track joints & cleaning first.

Still recommend rail clamps as you can definitely get better contact for trouble free operation in the years to come.

It took awhile to get to the trouble, but at least you can now enjoy the good running.

Don't hesitate to come back if you have trouble in the future.

George Schreyer's website has been a great resource for me since 2000,
ex. direct link to his big hauler page;

In a earlier post, mention of brass track turning green.... In the yr 2000 when assembling our trackage   applied a mm of a competitors conductive grease to the lip of each joiner before sliding the track together and tighten the screws securely ... track laid on a minimum 2" of 27 mm gyra rock base, and for ballast have used #1 chicken grit to simulate track/tie ballast.

Like the real railways,  ya do have to give the railheads a bit of a rub down (1000grit sandpaper  attached to a drywall sander), and reapply the #1 chicken grit maybe once a yr. .   NO green brass track !!   No problems related with track connections it has only been the competitors power switch box that died and required resoldering inside.   Also a competitors power transformer hiccuping to point another competitors transformer was acquired (when on sale) as back up (but still not used but other actual end users rate very dependable so confident it will perform real well when needed.)

All this enables train running for the last 15 yrs.,  snow clearing operations down to -5c  when snow type and depth permit  using THE  wedge gondola snowplow ( optimal 10 pds wt. added)

Hoping to hear more of your railway as it develops in the coming yrs. !
