I need a motor

I have a 20 year or so old N&W J Class locomotive. Recently my my loco began to slow down and began to smoke (not  installed) and stopped moving. I narrowed it down to the motor. I called and found Bachmann no longer carries parts for stuff that old. Been watching Ebay but so far no luck. Also my loco has the tendency to wobble caused by the front drive axle. Does any one else have the same problem? Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks JimmyO

I have been looking on Ebay for a motor. How ever if I buy one for parts I will eventually be looking for parts to repair that one too. I have done that with 3 other locomotives and they run quit well. Im kinda goofy that way.

I meant get another entire locomotive to cannibalize.  You will eventually need other parts anyway.

Go to the junk yard and find a broken power mirror out of a Dodge Caravan Or a Jeep they have 2 motors in each MIRROR .The Caravan/Voyager has  Mabuchi single shaft motors in them,Then they use the smaller single shaft motor in there Jeeps that looks the same dimension that Bowser uses in the executive line diesels now, but only a single shaft style.I used the larger style late 90's early 2000 ish Caravan mirror motor to repower Rivarossi steam.They are gold colored can motors with high torque at low rpm and smooth and silent.The size up about the same as a Bmann can motor in length but may be a little wider like what is in a Walthers FA and gp 9.

While they don't address the split gear issue directly, Model Railroading, when it was still around, did a couple of articles on upgrading the old split frame 4-8-4's using the original chassis. They were in the 1986 MRM May/June and the July/ August Issues. Someone scanned them and posted them over on the Tyco forum several years ago. The May/June scans can be seen at:

Nice work Len.Where theirs a will theirs a way.I have a few of those motors in my parts box also.I need to get a hold of one of those split frame pancake motor locos and try to figure a good fix for them .Seems like there are many that are questioning on what can be done to fix them rather then spend the dollars for a new drive .Getting to be a popular question here.You the Man. Info worth having, thanks. Have a Reading 2-8-0 which could use the conversion. Is currently operating as a rather heavy and draggy dummy unit with pancake motor removed.

Just to be clear, the CD player motor conversion of the Bachmann loco is NOT mine. Like I said above the pictures, it's something someone did several years back I pointed to the picture of. I've used similar motors to repower a couple of Rivarossi locos, but not any Bachmann's.
