Hello, i just acquired a New, in the box Jupiter 4-4-0 Locomotive.
Could anyone tell me what I should do before firing her up?  She is brand new, never driven, old stock

Thanks

johnH123

is it one of the new ones bachmann just put out?

Old stock you say?

Might be a good idea to give 'er some fresh oil and gear grease in case the old stuff has dried out.

This should be your loco. I have had one. Motor in the tender.
Loco picks up from one rail and tender other rail.

Q tip a alcohol to clean wheels, wipers.

A dab of Labelle 108 on each end of motor shaft.

Pull the loco gear cover and a little 102 gear oil. This gear oil is liquid type so put a little on the gears. Remember, a lot is not needed. Just requires a thin film on the teeth.

In case you wonder, they can be converted to DCC but it is a challenge.

Those are brush caps. NO OIL. Only a tiny drop where the shaft comes out of the shaft bearing. On the right side, look in the end of the plastic cap.
Left side, you can see the shaft coming out of the sleeve bearing.

Wipers on on the two trucks.

From what I recall, the loco picks up power from the metal axle and transmits through the metal frame. A wire goes from the frame to the tender motor. Look at the diagram I sent before. Very clear.

Does wipers = pick up shoes?

Turn the tender upside down and look. Wipers, pickup shoes.

This guy has done a lot with these older tender drive locos. They can really run quite well but takes patience.
I have run them on DCC with a small N scale size decoder.

Right from the Bachmann Parts page for this loco. Go look at the bachmann american 4-4-0 parts list. Everything is shown.
