Can they be used in a locomotive that isn't supposed to sound like them?

I think it would be a laugh to use the Whitcomb module in my Heisler or perhaps a 2-6-0 when they're released.

The modules appear be identical in form, and I imagine the functions are the same (just with different sound files) but I don't want to ruin my locomotive by blindly trying it.

I don't see a reason why not.
If the pin-outs are the same it should be possible.
The only difference are the soundfiles in the chip.

Sure you can.  You won't ruin the loco.
It'll just sound weird if you use a 2-6-0 and the chuffs won't match the Heisler.
