one is item #518023 Cargo King , and the other one is item #518023 Iron King.  Cargo King UPC code # 22899 00680 and Iron King UPC code #22899 00693. Neither of these layouts have ever been opened and are in like brand new condition.  I don't remember when I bought them.  Can you tell me how old they are, and if they are worth anything.

Don't mislead the fellow by showing him outdated prices Terry.

I don't know how old they are by looking at that place. It said discontinued so I figured that was the price when they were discontinued. If he didn't remember when he bought them, he probably didn't remember what he paid for them. I was giving him an idea of what they cost new.

Model and toy trains have very low if any resale value at all unless they date before maybe 1960 or so, and even then, they have to be relatively rare.  That's pretty much what the Bach Man was saying.

Go to any train show.  The broad expanse of junk, often broken or in pieces (watch a kid play with a train) believed to be treasure is beyond mortal comprehension.

I have found references in online conversations with people talking about having bought about Cargo King or Iron King from 2010 to 2012.

These train sets were both offered at most Hobby Lobby stores at around the time Hobby Lobby opted to carry less model railroad items. Alternatively Hobby Lobby had the 50% off any one item coupon. So whether you got them with the coupon or on clearance they would have been most likely in the range of $20-$50.
I know I bought a Bachmann N scale set with a similar MSRP around that time from Hobby Lobby on clearance for $20, it was the one that included a UP 4-4-0 and 3 or 4 old-time passenger cars.

This is interesting. I only see them listed in the 2012 catalog (Pages 18-19) but people are talking about them in 2010.
