The two early construction photos are on the Rock Island.  It took a while to see, but it is barely visible  on the caboose sides.  Plus, the herald on the work car behind the engine says "Rock Island System " instead of just "Rock Island." I've never seen that before, this is very early.  Plus, the rail being laid appears to be pre-connected in multiple lengths, brought in laying over several flat cars and winched up to the front to be put down on the ties, a very early cousin of welded rail.  These are astounding and interesting photos in several aspects.  I guessed at first the very barren location to be Western Oklahoma possibly, but could it be northern tundra prairie?  Something I'm not familiar with.

Actually, looking closer, it's cross ties being conveyered up to the front,  still very cool early mechanized track laying technology .
