What is that, an open pit mine?  I read that Desloge was built around lead mining.  Is that still going on?

There's no lead mining going on by me. There used to be a lot of it. In the past few years, they've just gotten rid of the two big chat piles that were here for a long time. They were close to me. A number of yards down the street from me are being remediated right now. We pretty much lived in the shadow of this one. We are about halfway between the mound and where the pic was taken from.

I'm less than a mile from the Missouri Mines site. The mine is closed but they do tours. If you would look back over your shoulder from where the pic was taken from, Missouri Mines site is right there.

A lot of the towns and places down here have mining type names: Silver Mines, Mine La Motte, Ironton, Mineral Point, Leadwood, Irondale, Leadington, Cobalt, Old Mines, Valles Mines, Etc.
They are gearing to do some cobalt mining few miles South of where I am. The announcement was just made in April.
Doe Run Company still operates some mines in a few towns within 50 miles. They are mining lead, copper and zinc.
