I have an N scale 2-8-0  dcc ready  that i have converted.   the loco ran well for a few weeks,  then it stall randomly
around the layout never in the same place. if i go to the loco and touch it it starts again (and i do mean very light touch)
i have several other locos that all work fine with out issue.
Here is what i have done before you ask
1 cleaned the track several times.
2 cleaned the loco wheels
i have a power buss under the layout with feeds about every 3 feet
re-soldered the connections to look for cold solder joints i have looked for binding in the linkage i do not see any.

Welcome.

It does sound like a poor connection somewhere.
Maybe pickups on the wheels, maybe. The wheels may be clean but not where the pickups contact. I have no idea how the N scale 2-8-0 picks up, only the HO version.
Does the decoder snap in or is it hard wired? No idea where the decoder is. I will have to look at the diagram page but you did modify it.
The microprocessor only needs a slight interruption to go into a stop mode.
Not a big deal but there is a N scale forum. The message will probably be moved.
