I bought a Spectrum item # 81412 DCC ready this past June from a dealer at a local train show. I was about to get a decoder for it and was told that there was a problem with shorted pins that burned out decoders. Is this fixable and how do I know if mine has this peoblem without destroying a decoder? Also, which decoder should I use to get function & sound?
Thanks in advance.

find out if the train show you went to has a website and e-mail them the same question you put here and if they don't give you a straight answer goe to the NMRA (Nation Model Railroad Association) :)

Found  the problem on:
http://home.neo.rr.com/mrwithdcc/doodleb.html.
Shows the problem and gives a couple of fixes also. I used my Ohm meter to find the short and then used a safety pin to scratch / break the bad connection. Now the short is gone. All I need now is a decoder to check it out .
Anyone install one that has sound and function? Please let me know.
