I really hate to keep this going, because its so pointless,
but no, you are not right.
you said "and it only went up to 10 mph."

the paragraph you cite says "Another major problem with the triplexes was that the steam supply was inadequate for speeds past 10mph on the Erie and 5 mph on the Virginian."

"inadequate for speeds past 10mph" is not the same thing as "it only went up to 10 mph." It could go faster than 10mph..just not very well.

so you are still wrong.

(im really sorry everyone..I know I started this, but I wish I could take it back now..)  :P
sometimes its just pointless to try to use basic logic..

It's after 9 p.m., so I can post the next picture. Here it is:

Hopefully someone will get this one. (Hint, it's currently rusting in Delaware)

Amtrak Turbo Train re-built by Supersteel for New York State DOT.  Used for about 1 year in revenue service then stored due to a "flap" between Amtrak and NYS.  Power Cars 2141 and 2162.  If someone can help me figure out how,  I can post some shots includind the interiors.

Upon "further review" the posted picture (taken at Supersteel in Scotia, NY) was of "set 1", not "set 2" (PC 2141 and 2162) mentioned in my last reply.  It was the set used in revenue service with PC 158 and I believe 153.  It is currently stored with set 2 as well as the other 3 sets not rebuilt after the "flap" started.  Too bad as they were real crowd (passenger) pleasers with a great ride and huge windows.  Unfortunately their operating cost per passenger mile was about 3 times that of a 5 car P-32 Amfleet set.

OK this is the last time I am arguing. I cant fit "inadequate for speeds up to 10 mph". The thing only allows 160 letters or something and I used all of them.

I am still right.

OK, Triplex problems.  The fundamental issue with the Triplexes was that the firebox could not heat sufficient water fast enough to feed all those cylinders, even with compounding.  The loco was probably capable of running at 40 mph, but poor steaming meant it ran out of breath in a real hurry.  The note regarding 10 mph references the fact that this was about as fast as the engines could run for any length of time, rather than their potential capability.  This is coupled with the fact that all that tractive effort was beyond the strength of many of the car coupler drawheads of the time, and pull-aparts were common as well.  After a brief try with the locos as road power, they were very quickly relegated to pusher service for the few years they survived.

He wasnt talking about your signature!
he was just talking about Triplexes in general..it was not directed at you.

how about this:

The Erie P-1 triplex, the Matt H. Shay. Built in 1914, two more triplexes followed 1916. It was built to carry 640 50 ton cars, but couplers of the "teens" couldn't hold that weight. It seldom went above 10 mph.

Thats shorter than it was, and its more accurate.
