Cab forward

Here is a whimy project. Saw this project some years ago. I am using a Mantua 0-6-0. I added a cross compound air pump as I have photos of 0-6-0s with this style pump.
Found a oil tender on ebay, older Bachmann I believe. Still work to be done.

That cab-in-front casting for the Little Joe was made by Kemtron years ago.  Don't know if it still in PSC's catalog.  I think they made the part in both brass and stryrene.

Yup, this project was described in Rose's Complete Book of Model Railroading, which was published, I believe, in the early 1960s and has been in my library since I was a kid. (I've read it so often the cover is coming off).

It does make for a whimsical little engine, like something you might find running on the Gorre & Daphetid.  ;D

I don't rember for sure, but i think it was based on a prototype, in 1890's/1900's an oil burning 4-4-0 or 2-6-0, small anyway, lost its cab in a wreck, and the shortline's shop coupled the tender to the cowcatcher, 'cause all they needed was longer plumbing, and built this trolley car end to replace the smashed wood. Back then oil burners were mostly san fran and central Cal area I would think. Suppose to be the model espee looked at when the mallets were chocking guys in the tunnels and snow sheds, any oil burner can run with a cab like this... but without pilot wheels, slowly on the curves...

The first Cab Forward was built by  North Pacific Coast RR, a narrow gauge road north of San Fransisco,  in 1901.
The Master Mechanic of NPC, one Bill Thomas, was pretty inventive and full of ideas.
He took the frame and running gear from a junked 4-4-0 and built a new locomotive, numbered 21 and named it Thomas Stetson, but most people knew it as "The Freak". It was taken out of service after only a few years, as it was a bad puller.

The NPC were later merged into Northwestern Pacific, which came under the SP umbrella.

The Italian State Railways (FS) have been reported to have had a few 0-6-4 Cab Forwards, were the coal was carried in bunkers alongside the boiler, and the tender only carried water.

I have seen the site for the NG 4-4-0. Someone sells an unpowered pewter & brass model on ebay for $200.00. They have a suggestion for powering it.

This conversion was done as a tongue in cheek gag on John Allen. He approved. Every now and then you can pick up a small locomotive already converted.
