This can be something to check out at the toy store. WM has some 1:144 tanks & WW2 airplanes. Most are German, some US, a few Japanese. You may also find some 1:144 scale models. (This may work for Nscale).
You may check out the gaming stores if they begin to carry some WW2 or other items. The popularity of Allied & Axis or Band of Brothers items could yield something useful in your scale.

Can not even think about this on most layouts. Who has the room to accomodate such a module?
