A Google search of "excursion railroads" resulted in 434,000 sites.  Add all the railroad names attached to museums, historical societies, private lines (such as Paperton Junction Southern), railroad clubs, live steam, etc, the list grows to about 2,000,000 sites.

This site only lists 200 North American excursion railroads registered in their database:

http://www.railsnw.com/region99.htm

Worldwide including historical?.....A "WAG" of 500,000 total railroad names might be conservative.

Good luck

I don't like straying off topic, but since it has already been brought up:

http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/corporate_info/uprrover.shtml

As of 2007, CN had 1,581 locomotives, while UP had 8,721. UP has the higher trackage and revenue.  The proposed CN - BNSF merger of 1999, which would have formed a new corporate entity called "North American Railways"  was rejected by the STB. No further merger proposals have been filed.

In 2000 a news service erroneously reported an "alliance" between the two companies, there is no official notice of such an alliance by either railway.  CN does have an alliance with KCS for the stateside routes.

Even if CN and BNSF were to form such an alliance, UP is still the largest single corporate railroad in North America.

CN controlled trackage stated on that site is  50,000 km.

UP trackage primary main line 58,364 km, add second, third, fourth main line and auxiliary brings total to 87,091 km under direct control.
