roadbed or not roadbed??..that is the question!!I was wondering how necessary is the roadbed

what could be the problem if i dont use a cork or similar roadbed?
what are the benefits.
what about partially roadbed?

I would consider roadbed a necessity for your mainlines.  Any yards you could transition to no roadbed.

The main benefit other than looks, is the fact that it deadens noise when the train is running.

Hope this helps some.

I use cork roadbed for my N scale layout, as it represents a mainline railroad. I don't use roadbed on my On30 layout, because it is supposed to represent a backwoods cheaply made railroad.

To answer your question, it depends on what kind of railroad you want to model. Hope this helps.
