Rail Gaps??? DCC signal - maybe I'm dumb

Hi,

I feel really stupid. Can anyone explain the meaning of rail gaps in relation to the NCE signal module? I have a NCE dcc system with Bachmann ez track

without the gaps the controller couldn't turn on and off the section it controls.

The signal controls a block (section) of track.  Gaps at each end. On the real railroad a block may be a mile long.

The gaps need only be in one rail, the track power for that rail is
routed through the sig12 module which contains a current detector.

When a loco or lighted car enters that section of track it changes the signal indication.

Without the gaps the signal would never change.

Tim the unit powers both rails and it show both rails with gaps.

Look at the diagram again.

It says gaps on inner rails are optional.

For train detection the railroad must be blocked electrically
DC or DCC.

His question was "why the gaps?"
