Why are you not asking on their web site?

You can even download that cover if you want.

The engines are K series engines used by the D&RGW narrow gauge railroads. I can't tell from the picture, but they look like either K27's or K28's. But the tower is a model of the Chama coaling tower, so I would guess they are K28's. The tower is a wood kit and requires some modeling with wood skills. The engines are more than likely from Mountain Model Imports by Precision Scale.

thanks

My guess is a GE Dash 8-P32BWH  based on Amtrak roster shots. Google Amtrak Locomotives.

I hope you were able to find out what that engine was. It turns out that the article was about lighting your layout, and the engine was just in the picture with no info about it.

It also turned out that the info I gave you was about a narrow gauge article that was inside the magazine. Just shows where my head was at.

Bruce, it's not your fault. Magazines have a gimmick to ensure you search every page for the benefit of the advertisers. They headline an article on the cover, but change the article title in the contents. Some magazines don't even have a contents page, and the cover photo leads nowhere.
