Dear Bach-Man, The reason that 1/29 models are on the rise is the youth-factor. The steam-to-diesel era guys are declining...You've expressed here in this column that you own a good bit of 1/29 equipment, and that Bachmann will continue to adhere to it's Narrow-Guage "niche." Build more White Pass & Yukon models and you'll cater to the "millions" of riders and railfans who share fascination with this success story in the fabled-North. Not only will Bachmann make a killing-they'll obtain new hobbyist in the process. Remember, Athearn and Atlas are taking-over because they build for the scale-crowd, and Atlas owns the "O Scale" market just as Bachmann used to hold-fort with LGB in Large Scale. Build them and we will buy...Good Luck.

There are no dumb or stupid questions, just questions!

Bill while Bmann has built a few Ten Wheelers and other stock, for the mostpart  the "Scale" stuff is missing, I'd love a WP&Y Mike, to then model like #190, the Yukon Queen now at Tweetsie!

#3
a question re the White Pass Annies - a friend of mine looked at mine (#14 from a set btw) and said it should have Walschaerts valve gear rather than the simplified (Stephenson?) type that mine has. Is this true?

Andy

Loco Bill

Hi Andy,  The #14 Annie does come from Set 90059,  The number 14 Annies all have the Simplified Stephenson vale gear.

I have heard that one guy swapped the running gear from #10 WP&Y Annie so he could have the Walschaerts gear on his number 14.

The only WP&Y Annie as manufactured with the Walschaerts gear was the #10 Bachman no 81096,  All the others have the Stephenson!

Happy railroading!

Justin,
That looks like a lot of WP&Y to me.  :)
More so than any other large scale mfg.

Thanks for coming back Bill -

I think my friend was actually saying that my #14 was incorrect as a model in that the real 12":1ft Baldwin #14 actually had Walschaerts valve gear (rather than Stephensons) and so my model doesn't follow the prototype.

I suppose one way around this would be to acquire an unlettered Annie with Walschaerts and swap the chassis over

I'm assuming that the WP&YR Annies are otherwise correct as modelled, being as I understand it, ex ET&WNC locos? or were there modifications carried out after they transferred?

Loco Bill

Andy,   Yes the unlettered Annie would work in a swap as would the #10 WP&Y if you had to have the number #14.

Unfortunately I am unable to answer your other question, perhaps a WP&Y expert will chime in.

Well, MY White Pass Annie has the correct, Walschaert valve gear, and always has had.

Still looks good, ten years on, a solid reliable performer in front of six WP H&S cars and an observation car with drumhead - it sure looks good in the dusk!
