i am modeling new jersey railroads and i would like to use two athearn passenger cars to make a version of the lackawanna railroad's electruic motorcars.

There are many ways  to do it - there is one company that offers a power truck intended to fit in passenger cars - saw it advertised recently, now can't find it - a bit under $100-.  Another method is to use diesel locomotive parts.

Nigel beat me to it...the PDT power truck by NorthWest Short Lines is a slick product.  NWSL used to have a single axle unit called called the Flea, but I'm not sure that it is available in a size appropriate for HO.  Sounds like a neat project.  Have fun.

Island Model Works has a shell for the Lackawanna MU's that's designed to fit on a Life-Like RDC drive. It's pretty expensive, though.

Those Proto 1k RDC's go pretty cheap on E-Bay as an incentive.  They are easy to convert to DCC. Not plug and play however.  I've also figured out how to get a working interior light, that dims as the coach runs and brightens as when it stops at a station.  I think it's pretty slick effect although it was unintended....

Trainworld has RDC3s for 15$... That's like 1/4 of the resin shell price.
