just got some presents a Bachmann Spectrum nw class j 4-8-4 and a kato GG1 both with knuckle couplers. What would be the best Bachmann EZ Mate couplers to change over some passenger and freight cars to connect to these engines?I see Bachmann has long and short shank knuckle couplers what would be best choice or is there something better?

I think most if not all of the old Rapido hook couplers had t-shanks. As far as I know Bachmann has not made the newer knuckle couplers to replace them. Go to the following site and see if you can find the conversion for your cars:
http://www.micro-trains.com/ConversionsN.php
They are good couplers but can be hard to put together and install.
The other option is checking with the manufacturer of the cars, sometimes you can get a complete truck assembly with a knuckle coupler already installed.
You really only need to do one end of a car if you always hook that one to the engine first.
