It certainly is noticable that the number of Spectrum steam engines which will only be available with DCC and sound is increasing.

Try finding a Heavy Mountain without sound. This model only came DCC ready, but I certainly do not see adding DCC being a problem as there are plenty of DCC boards available now and the prices have dropped substantially.

Not to mention they are made so sound-capable, that you can sometimes find a speaker opening on the bottom of the tender, even on DCC ready models. Personally, I would like to have sound, mostly because it's more realistic. It also gives me something else to hear instead of locomotive motors, which, with new decoders and can engines, isn't becoming much of a problem lately. As for my standard-line DCC Equipped diesels, they sound like a cracking piece of paper when starting at low speeds. I don't care that much, but I would like to see if theirs a loud enough speaker to drown it out. ;) I'll probably switch out the decoder, but because it isn't a big layout, I don't think I will.

Pacific Northern was right on his observation. It appears people are in a trend where shelf layouts are more the standard, realism is better then toyish fun, and finally, sound is more of the interest. The one about sound goes hand in hand with the whole realism trend...
