On30 / Re: Quanity of freight cars

well it depends on curves a nd the grade. The design of the 2-8-0 is much of mountain climber. small drivers sitting close together to give as much power on the rail  with a fairly sized boiler and machinery to provide the energy. Same thing with the mudhens whcih are Mikados, 2-8-2-.s . neither of the engines were any speed records but did good job on those grades.
On the flat line these could easliy pull some 40 loaded acars but when there is a grade the engine could handle at maximum grade only a handfull. The mogul could haul I guess a quite a string of cars on a level route but once there is a grade it is handicapped by one less axle of drivers.  Remember that the 2-8-0 is a fairly small engine but the dimensions on the cars offered by Bachmann are small too   So I could guestimate that on a 4 per cent grade a 2-8-0 could handle some 10 fully loaded cars in maximum, while a Mogul some fully loaded five or six cars...  Then there is the aspect of curves the smaller radius the less the engine could pull on grades.

There is normally no way we as modellers can duplicate everything from the prototype  and I guess one of the aspects towards mountain scenes is the fact to kep the length of trains on the short side, and as it is easy to duplicate patterns from the prototype thanks to modern technolgy with DCC, it is easier to navicate a helper engine on a loaded train over that mountain pass, yet keeping things short and manageble.  One common method to get that heavy train over a grade was to double it. Take that long consist and couple of the other half at the foot of the grade and when you get to the yard at the summit park that section there and get the iother half and resalmble that train at the summit and and continue further to the next stop...

I got one thing I am curious about. How much wider is a B-manns 2-8-0 compared to B-manns Forney. If anyone has a pic of both engines sitting side by side would do a lot.

Speaking of stacks, when I got mine, my intention was to replace it with the regular one and keep it as a coal burner. As I am of finnish orgin and have a few books of finnish steam, at one angle it looked pretty close to finnish to me so I kept it and made it a wood burner.
Many of the early finnish steam were imported from USA and they even had typical Wild West looking Americans, with baloon stacks and cow catchers (4-4-0) on their broad gauge (1525mm), which is same as the russian gauge. The last US steamers in Finland were 2-10-0.s that looks a lot like modified Russian Decapods and were built in late 1940.s, but that is another story. Don't want to hijack this thread too much....

To make things interesting unlike Sweden which had various narrow gauge lines in various gauges, Finland had a only a few and some of them had 750 mm gauge which turns out very close to 30 inch gauge.
Finns unlike swedes kept on wood burners after WWII when imported coal became available. The ordered second engine the Little River painted one will also be a wood burner too. The plan is for both and planned third con to replace the lettering with my own road name, but keeping the org. road number.  As the planned road will be a log hauling common carrier, the Onion stacked wood burners makes a whole lot of sence. Though I will model "Somewhere in Northern America", I still will be able to keep a little touch with my native country....

In many ways I am greatful that Bachmann decided on 0n30, and a rather generic 2-8-0, it will make it easier to freelance something and yet make it credible as I would not have to discuise its orgin, like if I was having a C16. The B-mann 2-8-0 is I guess one of the best buys in model railroad market. It got the looks and detail, runs well and you are able to customize it a lot right out of the box. And those counter weights are noticeable and the outside frame and the counterweights makes it really fun to watch in action, one day with a consist of bulk head flats (B-Mann!! hint, hint hint....) and few loads of general freight.

Having fun!!!!/Ollie

Steamer tend to get "dirty", or as we say weathered pretty fast. So I guess within time they would be covered wirh oil, dust road grime. So I guess this is why black was the most obvious and most common color, it did not show off the dirt right away. As most of people have stated here, black is allways right on a steam engine.

I finally got around with a next part of this project.
It is a closer look on the preserved part of a Swedish log hauler, DONJ.
It looks in many ways like a swedish version of shop areas  on E.B.T.

On next part, I will have a closer look on track and turnouts.

On30 / After a year....
June 10, 2007, 05:04:58 PM
It is been roughly a year since I got my first and single 2-8-0, there are plans for more of them. First I need to have a few samples of track. As living in Europe, I guess Peco is a close choise but I am waiting for the turnouts from Micro Engineering, as far I guess Peco turnouts look to small for a road where the bulk of motive power will be made of these 2-8-0.s.
The detailwork is pretty awesome, at least considering the price and the paint is great and it runs good. My plan is simply remove the road name on the tender and replace it with mine. Same thing will be done with its sisters when they will arrive to the new founded line. The engine sits on code H0 70 rail from Shinohara. The car is an old Matchbox car I have had since I was a kid.

I am looking also some matching kits to go along, though I love Colorado NG, my intention is try to stay away from it and also many of the models which has Colorado NG as prototype. I am eye balling at Walthers Soo Line station a a candidate. It is small enough to look good, having two with detail changes might look just great.

Yes, I am to get Moguls later on, but I am looking for some for me matching replacement cabs. also majority of the steamers will be wood burners, remember I am a finn and in Finland they used wood burners right to the very end of steam. With that onion stack the con, does resamble som of finnish narrow gauge steamers. One of them is running on a preserved road in Southwest of the country. It has inside frame, but not looking to much to details looking as a fair match...

The finnish Con with a passanger train More infoon this engine and the line: http://www.jokioistenmuseorautatie.fi

One of the major inspiration for the line actually comes from Sweden, not far from my house was a strting point for a short ore hauler, which after change of ownership transformed itself in to a log hauler, feeding a large paper mill at the coast with steady flow of fresh logs. The rail road ran mostly in remote ares from the more moutaineous west to the argicutural east before reaching the Baltic Sea.. The greatest part is that a 6 kilometer strech has been preserved, including the orginal shops, and stalls. Visiting that small hamlet is in very ways a flash back in time to the early thirties. Next to the yard is an old blast furnace which is being renovated and open for a guided tour.

Not letting this topic go....

What I was figuring was that these could be scale alternatives to 1.29 stuff which ought to be 1.32 scale considering the gauge. Knowing this distort, it does give me some hard time give that scale a serious stab.

One cool thing started out by a German specialist on H0-scale narrow gauge equipment was that they started to concentrate on producing models from a few prototypes, thus there has been a lot of growing interest on the very scenic Swiss RhB and that line of Bemo roducts from that prototype. LGB have jumped on that train too and every year presents something new from RhB prototype. To my knowledge White Pass as a prototype for a line with new products would be more than perfect. Scenerywise as interesting as the NG lines in Colorado too.

It has had a lot of interseting steam and from to more modern power with wide cabs, all in scale and with a narrow gauge charm.

On30 / Re: How about a backdated mogul?

Nice looking engine & I guess I would budget for one.
My 0n30 plans are for a pretty freelanced pike, based on a swedish log hauler, located somewhere in Northern America with lot of finnish influence. This means a majority of the engines will be wood burners.. Would look just nice along my woodburner B-mann Cons..  By the way, who sells and makes stacks like that for the mogul?

Finns had wood burners to the very end of steam sometime in the late seventies, including very modern power.  8)

Well my idea was to offer something else than steamers, don't get me wrong I like steamers but I guess my  generation or younger have not seen steam engines that often but though compared to a GP, these alcos look a bit weird, but they are I guess more regonizeable for us who are used to diesels.. What about myself? I would love to see these units snaking around on my garden, maybe I will adda few large bolders and a grade........, and perhaps a little later a GE Showel nose to go along.  Yes dreaming is free, but this one not that off the rails...

Large / Just an idea....

Instead of going 1:29, it could be VERY nice to see some of White Pass Alcos as models. I know that LGB does these but they are way too short and distorted protions. This would be especially nice knowing that there are both with conventional cabs and wide cabs and they have been various paint jobs....  I guess these would be pretty ideal modern power for garden roads....
What do you think of the idea?

I don't know about you guys, I think these units would be very cool snaking around the lawn......
