On30 / Smoked my 0-4-0 Gas Mechanical
August 25, 2011, 03:38:30 AM
Had a  Gas Mech that had other issues and the thought of a battery powered critter came to mind and playing around with a 9v battery and just the motor from the GM I hooked it up and all was good for about 15 seconds then ...............smoke..............

Now I am really confused, I have another one that has a Bachmann decoder hooked straight up to the motor without going through the original board.  The decoder puts out 12-14v for the motor and yet the 9v fried the other motor.

Bach-Man    I need some clarification.  Is the smaller motor in the GM not able to handle the 9v?  If not why is the same motor working off a decoder without the benefit of the original circuit board?

Thanks for any help

On30 / Re: How to fix a stripped gear?

A more permanent solution is to take a very small ring of 1/8 Aluminum tubing and slip it over the U-Joint.  The Aluminum tubing is a couple 1/1000 ths smaller than the u-joint.  It will press on with a touch of effort and stay forever.

The CA will hold for awhile, but that u-Joint is made from Derlin and the CA will not stick to it forever.

On30 / 4-6-0 Headlight and tender light burnt out

Ok,

I fried both LED's on my 4-6-0, so now that I know that I need a resistor in line with the LEDs I need to know how to replace the LEDs, I want to use the same headlight, just need to replace the LED.

thanks

On30 / Re: On30 Wheels
September 26, 2010, 12:41:24 PM
Thanks for the reply guys,

I thought at some point I saw a "bulk" pack of Bachmann wheels.

I have some of the KD 24" On30 wheels and they do work, but the flange is a little rough and requires some "cleaning"

Thanks

Looking for just On30 wheels, not wheels and trucks, just wheels.  Are they sold?

thanks

On30 / Re: On30 shay gears

Pretty sure Bachmann calls them "clips"

they charge $1.00 each.  I broke my first one, but have removed the last 6-8 without problems.  Take a very small flat screwdriver and pry them off from the bottom.

I did receive a replacement gear set for a new loco  that had split gears, Bachmann sent it to me at no charge.  I want to get my other shays running and they said they would charge me for them.  I ordered them because I want to see my shays run, not just sit and be yard junk.

I agree about a bad design and there charging for these parts seams a little cheap on there part.

What amazes me is that they have NEVER even agreed that there was a problem, they have not anounced that they had a replacement part.  Every time I called about this issue they seamed shocked that there was a issue.  (Stick head in sand)  Now a replacement part shows up.  IF there never was a problem then why is there a different replacement part?

I am happy there is a replacement part that seams to work,  but it really tells allot about the company by the way they have handled this.

Read this fast, I expect it will be deleted like other post on this subject.

On30 / Re: what is On21/2?
May 03, 2010, 12:30:46 PM
MR is in it's own little world and has very little to do with NG, so when I discovered On30 (not On2 1/2) I canceled my MR subscription  and now pick up the NGSL that is much more in tune with what I want to do.  MR is dedicated to the mainline RR with an ocasionial blurb about NG. NGSL is 100% NG, so that is where I chose to spend my $$. I understand that folks who do mainline stuff would have very little interest in NGSL and that's fine.

I have a box from Bachmann with two shafts and gears,  No plastic clips as promised, but got new gears.  Didn't have much time to look at them, but they are different than the originals.

will expand later.

I don't believe it, but

Talked with Bachmann and they do have a revised set of gears and they are sending me a set.  I will hold off judgement untill I get them, I will get a full report to everyone as soon as I have more info.

Hang in there, there might be hope

I must have the worst luck of all when it comes to the shays.

I have had 5 of them and everyone has had a cracked gear and waddles down the track like a goose.

So I took a chance and bought another one hoping that the issue with the gears has been resolved.

Got it today put in on my test track and same thing.  brought out the optivisor and two cracked gears.

Less than 30 seconds of run time and two bad gears.

The rod locos run great, my most resent was the 4-6-0 and that thing is a dream.

I bought this in hope of having at least one running shay,  but hopes are dashed.

Please fix this.

quick and easy way,   mail it to Bachmann with a $25.00 check and they will send you a new one.

Good luck
