Thomas & Friends / Cable Reel Construction
March 27, 2009, 06:06:04 PM
For sizes I used pictures from the Ladybird Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends books I have, specifically Percy Runs Away and Thomas Down the Mine.

Noticing from the books pictures the circumference of the cable drum was similar if not the same size as Gordon's front boogies. I then measured my HO Gordon's boogies and based the sizes on these figures.
Just as with the extended sectons of the red coach and snow plough I used my computer to make a template to what I believe where the component parts and printed the templates onto card. I then cut them out taking extra care as due to the size this was very fiddly, glued them together doubling up on some parts to give them that chunky look and also to add strength, painted it and used some thread again doubled up to make the cable.

I have got some plans for future projects but nothing near completion yet. Will post pictures/updates a.s.a.p. and as before suggestions are welcome.

i want to make a thomas engine in n scale with a minitirx 0-6-0 engine i have it doesn't look like any charters but i want to customise it but i need a way to make in n scale face for it

I don't mean it to sound like I'm telling you what to do but I'd wait for a manufacturer (like TOMIX) to make a model of each character themselves as although you can put a lot more stuff into an N scale railway layout everything is VERY expensive, which you probably already know.

And also if you go down the route of trying to alter an existing N scale model expense is a major factor if you happen to make  any mistakes.

'maybe want to add Gordon with a cable reel attached to his front buffer-beam'
                  SmokeyNSteamer - Wishlist thread

With the above suggestion I've decided to have a go at the cable reel for Gordon. I have already made a template for it and main construction is under way.

Construction of other bits and bobs are also under way...

Check back here soon for pictures...

Thomas & Friends / Thomas' Snowplough

I did eventually invest in the Holiday Special set but I tried my hand at making my own snow plough for Thomas before my purchase.
Here are some pictures;

Not too shabby...

Thomas & Friends / Thomas Snow Plough

I am aware that the 'Thomas' Holiday Special' set includes a snow plough but does anybody have any ideas of how I could get my hands on one instead of making my own, or purchasing the set (which I don't really want to do as I have no need for accessories that come with it.)

Well Hornbys 75 ton crane was my thinking for a platform for Rocky, if I was to go down the route of manufacturing my own version.

I used the wheels from an Annie/Clarabel coach, and made the rest from card, in much the same way I made the extension section for the Red Branch line coach.

The log flat bed trucks and Arthur I think are possible and I don't want to be black balled but I think that Hornby's version of Old Slow Coach is pretty good, but I think that Rocky is just a little too ambitious (but you never know).

Any more suggestions? and I won't shoot all them down...

Thomas & Friends / WORKS UNIT = Complete
February 15, 2009, 01:48:53 PM
Here's the finished model of the Breakdown Crane Works Unit;

#44
Breakdown 'Works Unit' mock up, not the best it could be but it'll get there.

Above is the orginal series version for comparison, no contest really but until Bachmann or someone else produces there own it'll have to do.

Final 'Works Unit' model is in production, this will have a better finish and decals for the lettering on the coach sides.

And Edward's Branch line Coaches;

More updates coming soon...

Thank you. If I am able to find a suitable coach for the 'Works Unit' then yes, but I don't know if anybody has any ideas regarding the type I could use or where I could look to get some ideas? I might convert the hornby track cleaning coach into something that resembles the coach unit then.
