A real shame about IHC  :-\ They produced nice, quality locos for many years and for low prices. The latest Premier Gold line products were DCC ready, had flywheels and RP-25 wheels. I have several. They had really come into their own.

Sorry, that first message as tongue in cheek. I thought the ebay article  was quite humorous. I guess I am easily entertained ...

Quote from: Johnson Bar Jeff on January 28, 2010, 01:37:46 PMIt is very funny. And I bet someone buys it!

I've always noticed that when somebody posts an eBay item for "parts" or "restore" that it attracts a lot of bids, more than if it were listed as "runs OK." I see the OP item has already got one bid..

Trains were around in the landscape so I guess I saw them. But the first formal trip to see a train was in January 1953 when I was 3 1/2 years old. Dad took me to the Silver Spring MD train station to see the train carrying the Trumans home to Missouri after Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration. Truman was graciously granted the use of the presidential train car with the open rear platform, the same one he had used campaigning when he was president. Silver Spring is the first stop west of Washington DC on the B&O Metropolitan Branch between DC and Point Of Rocks MD where it joins B&O's "Old Main Line" via the Patapsco river valley from Baltimore for points west. The train stopped at the station and former president Truman made a short speech from the platform to the large gathered crowd. I've read that this practice was carried out during the entire trip. A whistle stop farewell if you will. Very young, I didn't remember the event very well.

Thanks Harold,

Your pics are another inspiration for me to finally replace my ten year old "temporary" small layout  :D

The best Bachmann Steam engine for the money is the Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation (with DCC but no sound). It runs great and pulls well too ...

ABC, your glowing recommendations of this model have convinced me to get one (or two)  :D I have enjoyed these on tourist lines. I have a small layout with 18" and 22" radius curves, and also small cars. Penn Line 60' shorty passenger cars as well as Athearn, Model Power and Con Cor 72' models. My freight cars are primarily transition era variety. I can add the 2-8-0 to my SY 2-8-2 which I bought after riding on an excursion behind the (now Susquehanna) #142. At the time it belonged to Connecticut's Valley Railroad and the trip took us over former NYNH&H rails on the Providence & Worcester.

I notice this eBay seller has new Bachmann shells, so I assume they're available. However, I don't see the ones here that you are seeking.

HO / Re: Jerky GP40

Ed, I have non-DCC Bachmann B23-7's and GP-40's and several DCC GP-35's and 38's. And none of them run in a jerky manner. I run them on DC. It does sound like yours has an intermittent electrical pickup problem just as Ray has described. And that's not exclusive to Bachmann locos. I frequently have a loco on the bench for diagnosis and maintenance, and they are many different types and brands. The only thing I have never been able to remedy is a buzzy motor.

I have two loops which are powered by Spectrum Magnum Premier and Ultra Plus packs. They are nice as they have analog voltage and amps meters which can show you the slightest intermittent pickup problems. My best running 8 wheel pickup models show no movement in the meter needles at all.

... There are even some two motor 44 tonners out there, usually on ebay.
Some people get caught in this as they do not know all the info about what they are buying.

I have a few of the early two motor locos plus one of the 70 tonners. Split axle gears has happened to all but one. Is this the problem you're referring to Lex? On mine it happened years later even as they sat in their storage boxes on the shelf, not while in use. Originally they ran very quiet and smooth.

I note that the two motor units usually go for a premium on eBay as people prize the tiny power trucks for other kitbashing projects.

HO / Re: Why Bach Man why? New GP7

Don't forget to include CN Zebras! I think that scheme would be very appropriate for GP7's (as well as GP30-40's and SD40's)

Thanks tac,

Pipefitter, OO models do run on HO track. Bachmann's thomas line is actually 1:76, not HO scale. Bachmann made the Thomas line 1:76 to match Hornby's british Thomas line i.e. so they are the same size. They will run on HO track. ;)

Thanks Roger T and IndiannaJones   :D

I've done some more searching and it seems these are Bachmann Branchline OO scale trains that run on HO track with 12VDC and are NMRA compliant. Some are DCC ready. However OO models are 1:76 scale therefore a bit larger than than HO scale. I would think this would not be a problem for these Underground Ernie models. It would appear there would be a problem with buying a British OO train set as the power supply would be designed for British outlets and voltage. However, it looks like these trains would run just fine on US HO tracks and power, either with DC or DCC with an added decoder.
