HO / Re: Steam engine suggestions

The engines I suggested have a more generic appearance with a center mounted headlight. They could be made into other road names as well, of coarse with a different tender.

Athearn cars are nice cars. If all my Athearn cars were one road name, I would have a complete set of the heavyweight cars.

The Bachmann Amfleet cars might work on an 18" radius curve, but I don't know because even though I am 19 I run more 1950's era/exursion passenger cars.

I already have two on order.  :-)

Nice!!! I am hoping to get one at some point. I want it in either Santa Fe or Union Pacific.

Try Athearn and Con-Cor for 72' scale cars and Roundhouse for 50' and 34' old time passenger cars.  My grandson and I have some of each and all work on 18" curves.  The shortest ones look the best on sharp curves.

I agree. I myself run Athearn, Roundhouse, and a couple of walthers passenger cars and the only one I have problems running on an 18" radius turn is my Walthers Milwaukee Road 261 Super-Dome 53. The Athearn and Roundhouse cars are good quality for the price (about $22 for Athearn Ready-to-Roll and about $20 for Roundhouse ready-to-roll 34' and 50' and about $30 for Roundhouse 85' palace cars. I have also found older Athearn kit car passenger cars which make up 4 of my 7 car Athearn brand fleet of passenger cars at my local hobby shop Scale Model Supplies for $11.25!) as they are nice running cars and are great looking. Walthers passenger cars you have to be careful about. As I said, I have the Milwaukee Road 261 version Super-Dome #53 and the other Walthers passenger car I have is the matching Milwaukee Road 261 version Skytop Lounge "Cedar Rapids" and the Cedar Rapids can operate on turns as sharp as an 18" Radius curve while the Super-Dome can operate on turns as sharp as a 22" radius curve. As far as what you get your son that is up to you, just trying to help you in your decision.

HO / Steam engine suggestions

Dear Bach-Man,
If you would be willing to consider these ideas, I have a couple of suggestions for standard line steamers. The first is Grand Canyon Railway #4960. An Ex-CB&Q class O-1A 2-8-2 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923 as it appears in Grand Canyon Railway operation.

The Second is Grand Canyon Railway #29. An Ex-LS&I class SC-3 2-8-0 built by ALCO's Pittsburgh Shops in 1906 as it appears in current Grand Canyon Railway service.

Again if you would please consider these ideas, it would be much appreciated.

Try the NMRA Train Show flyer. It has a description of the engine and the list of initial roadnames.
Hope that helps.

Rye-

EVERYTHING on the DM&IR had a heavy, ponderous look. This was very big-time railroading. Huge, heavy trains full of iron ore. Long grades through rugged terrain. Even the passengers were rough characters. One of the DM&IR's Yellowstones is up on blocks in the railroad museum in the old Duluth, MN, depot. It's huge, of course. Interestingly, they have electric motors which turn the wheels so you can watch the rods and valve gear do their jobs. Most cool. They even have a soundtrack though it's played at about ten percent volume compared to the real deal.

I have relatives up in the Duluth/Hibbing area and the only rough terrain you deal with is the roads in the area between Duluth and Hibbing and Cloquet and Hibbing. The DMIR itself was very good at making sure the tracks were smooth and close to level. And for the passenger trains, those were mainly pulled by 4-6-2's and sometimes a 2-8-2. Another thing DMIR fans need is SD-7's and SD-9's which the DMIR had a lot of.

For a quick comparison of the size of the EM-1, go to www.steamlocomotive.com, and click on he 2-8-8-4 wheel arrangement. Darn I was hoping for a DM&IR version

A DMIR version would be a nice addition to my more Minnesota style model railroad. I wish they would bring back the DMIR 2-10-2 and make a DMIR version of the 2-8-0 and a DMIR 2-8-2.

Thomas & Friends / Re: 2012: Your Predictions
August 16, 2011, 09:55:38 PM
For HO here is my predictions...
ENGINES:
1)Duck for sure
2)Oliver
3)Stepney
4)possibly Flying Scotsman if his model for the TV series been finished (All Bachmann would have to do is repaint Gordon to LNER Apple Green with alternating White-Black-White stripes like the original engine then make new tenders using the chassis for Spencer's Tender.)
5)The City of Truro

COACHES:
1)The Red Branchline Coaches
2)The Old Branchline Coaches (the Green and Off White coaches seen only in Season 1)
3)The Tan Branchline Coaches (the ones that looked like Annie and Clarabel but without faces. All that is needed is to modify the Annie/Clarabel roofs to work with the body from Emily's Coach then attached to the chassis for Annie/Clarabel)
4)Season 1 Style Express Coaches

OTHER ROLLING STOCK:
1)the Breakdown Train
2)Brown CCT vans (Identical to the Mail Van)
3)Brown 12 Ton Vans.

I know I have listed repeats, but, I have added a few that may have been left out.

It most likely won't be stated until the next catalog. But I agree that 22" would be an acceptable minimum turn Radius. I use mostly smaller sized engines like 2-8-0's, 4-6-0's and I also have a GS-4 4-8-4 #4449 and a C&O style 2-8-4. All Bachmann of coarse.

I got one a little over 3 years ago. So I have a feeling that was when the Rock Island 2119, which is the one I have, was a new model but I am not sure. But I got it from hobby town, 3 years ago, for about $120.

HO / Re: Bachmann Steam At Its Best
August 03, 2011, 02:36:35 PM
That was a neat video. I don't have either of the steam engines in the video. But I was at one point looking at getting the DMIR 2-10-2 #511 because my local hobbytown had one and I like the DMIR. As for the Santa Fe 4-8-4, I have a similar engine. The Southern Pacific GS-4 #4449 from Bachmann's Standard line. And man can that engine pull a long train.

at a $150 MSRP for the mogul with sound, that means my shop will be able to buy a good shipment of them and you know I'm definitely picking up alot of these for personal and club use :) I am very glad to see this new offering from bachmann. The next great thing is a deeper plunge into heavy steam locomotives, that being said maybe competitors will go the plunge as well.

On facebook I had suggested to Bachmann that they make another steam engine as a standard line engine with DCC and Sound, and it just so happens to be another ALCo engine. The Milwaukee Road's S-3 Class 4-8-4's numbered 260-269.

Noticed on the trailer for Public Enemies a shot of Milwaukee Road 261
The reason the Public Enemies trailer shows the Milwaukee Road 261 is because it is in the movie. Only for a couple minutes, but it was still in the movie.
